The city of Berlin has outsourced the procurement of IT equipment to a service centre, ITDZ.
ITDZ is currently exploring the possibilities of including social criteria in tender procedures. The first steps in developing a framework have been taken. The basis for this framework is a recent master thesis (attached). Part of the new ITDZ approach will be to question brand suppliers with regard to the implementation of the ILO Core Conventions throughout their supply chain. For what concerns environmental aspects, suppliers are required to have mechanisms in place for the sustainable disposal of obsolete electronic equipment.
This framework has not yet been put to practice – there are as yet no concrete examples of calls for tenders for IT hardware that included such social criteria.
