Platinum under our feet - 28-01-2010
New photo booklet gives a strong impression on communities affected by platinum and palladium mining.
Platinum and palladium are metals being used for electronics such as computers and mobile phones. Most of platinum and a fair amount of palladium is being mined in South Africa where several villages have been strongly affected by mining activities by companies such as Anglo Platinum. This photo booklet contains a compilation of photos that community members of affected villages took themselves, with small cheap camera’s to show the effects of the mining and the texts have been translated from texts that the community members wrote.
Many villages and community members are still struggling for the right to their way of life and many have been arrested or intimidated along the way. This booklet is being used by community members to show the effects of mining and has been widely distributed among the community members.
At the end of 2007 SOMO published a research on platinum and palladium mining in South Africa. This photo booklet is one of the activities to follow up on this research.
