When your mobile phone stops working or when you are offered a new phone for free, your old phone becomes waste. Electronic waste is often called e-waste. E-waste contains many hazardous and toxic materials that will harm the environment if not taken care of properly.

  Did you know?
  • Every year over 1,000 million mobile phones and 350 million computers are sold worldwide.
  • These massive sales will create a huge amount of waste in a few years.
  • Every year between 20 and 50 million tons of e-waste is added to existing dumps. This is such a gigantic amount that it would fill a containerised train that stretches half way round the earth!
  • 100 million phones are discarded in Europe alone every year.
  • In Holland, Sweden and Germany, each person throws away more than 5 kilos of e-waste every year.

So what should you do? Do the test to find out more.

Test

I take it to the local council.

I throw it in the bin.

I return it to the store.
